André Marques Chambel
André Marques Chambel (they/he) is an artist from Lisbon, Portugal. Chambel works in various mediums, usually exploring themes such as mysticism, mythmaking and liminality. They are currently undertaking a master’s degree in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, having a bachelor’s degree in Sound and Image from ESAD.CR.
“I have a special interest in symbols and allegorical images. Tarot imagery, as such, becomes an inspiration for many of my works. In this work, I took the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck (1909), with drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, and associated some of its cards to small statuary I had in my home. The idea of playing with dimensional images is really interesting to me, especially the movement of bringing a two-dimensional image to three dimensions. The figure leaves its frame, as if it were coming alive. My project is, then, a direct response to the images of the tarot, connecting them even more to the physical world. Their symbolism made manifest.“
