“This piece is in response to Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film, Dr. Strangelove, a movie I saw as a kid and, at the time, didn’t understand or appreciate. But over time I revisit the absurdity of nuclear annihilation and the immature and insecure people who wield the power to effectuate it. And each time we inch a little closer to a nuclear conflict, I think about the enthusiasm of Buck Turgidson and his nuclear arsenal, and I have to imagine the surreal aftermath of his childishness. When I was a kid in the 1980s, I was terrified of nuclear holocaust. I can’t believe we’re still worrying about it today.”
