Shaquanda M.

As a visual artist, Shaquanda M. (she/her) creates works that convey empowerment and historical awareness, utilizing social justice issues in the media as well as cultural and personal exploration. Her process involves deep research, and her pieces are meant to be provocative, meant to be not only seen but experienced. Shaquanda’s influences come from history and the many African-American artists that have paved the way for others like her.

I Call Her Goddess and I Call Her Chaos were created as means of exploration into the world of collage art. They was inspired by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat as well as Carlos Fama. The intention of I Call Her Goddess is to show black women’s ethereal beauty. This piece was inspired by the original photograph taken by JD Barnes for AFROPOLiTAiN Magazine. Immediately, I thought that this woman must be a goddess. The intention of I Call Her Chaos is to show the strength and beauty of black women. One word came to mind upon seeing the original photograph by Dennis C. Valdez: ‘powerful.’ I created this piece to showcase the calm resilience of the black woman when faced with chaos.”
