Kate Sutherland lives in Toronto, where she writes poems, makes collages, and teaches law. She is the author of four books, most recently a collection of poems titled The Bones Are There published by Book*hug Press in fall of 2020. “I draw from an eclectic range of sources for collage, but a rich vein I keep returning to is anatomical illustrations from old medical texts. They spark my imagination in myriad ways. With the centuries-old ones, the jarring juxtaposition of their classical nude outlines and their gory innards (or at least gorily displayed, with large swathes of flesh seemingly just torn back to reveal what’s inside) intrigues me. And many generate a related sense of paradox for me in that they’re at once very full (detailed depictions of organs, entrails) and very empty (bodies as mere vessels devoid of life). My impulse is to truly empty them, cutting away hearts, lungs &c, then refill them with other kinds of life.”
