Sofia Chapman
Sofia Chapman is a queer writer, accordionist, filmmaker, and artist who has exhibited in many solo and group shows. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Modern Languages, Tasmania, before running away with the piano accordion to play on a theatre barge in France. She returned to Australia to study playwriting and is now a professional accordionist with the band Vardos. Much of Sofia’s art relates to her plays, musical characters, and alter egos.
“The Four Accordionists of the Apocalypse is inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s engraving The Four Horsemen, from The Apocalypse (1498). I saw Dürer’s print in the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia during a somewhat down-and-out period in the ’90s when I was living off busking on the streets with my accordion. Struck by the work, I thought, ‘what if they were accordionists?’ I doctored the poster, which appeared in the Incinerator Gallery exhibition Amazing Accordions on Ice (Melbourne, 2005), and wrote a play with the same title and original accordion music, which won the Melbourne Fringe Best Emerging Artist award in 2012.”
